The A-Mechanic is responsible for performing quality mechanical work. Previous expereience in the petro-chemical or related field required. Duties of an A-Mechanic will include but not limited to: safety, quality, performing skilled work in Pipefitting and Boilermaker. This individual has to be goal orientated, self-motivated, and responsible for the appearance of themselves, and their jobsite.
The A-Mechanic will work closely with senior craft, with a goal of obtaining sufficient knowledge and experience en route to becoming a Master Mechanic or Welder. He or she will assist the senior craft in all assigned tasks. The Team Member shall work as an A-Mechanic until the necessary knowledge, experience, testing and certification have been met, to enable the A-Mechanic to advance to Master Mechanic or Welder.
STARCON is a merit shop contractor supporting a team working environment. As such, all team members will be required from time to time to perform other duties that they are qualified to perform, outside of this job description and their normal work function.
The normal work environment will be in a facility where exposure to outdoor weather conditions is possible and where proper PPE is required for a variety of potential hazards.
Roles & Responsibilities:
The roles and responsibilities of an A-mechanic may include but are not limited to the following items.
•Ensure proper permits have been obtained.
•Roll, Cut and Extract exchanger tubes from a Tube Sheet
•Provide Leadership and knowledge to Team Members in lower classifications
•Assembly and disassembly of heat exchangers, pressure vessels, etc.
•Isolation of equipment (blinding, LOTO, etc.)
•Perform hot taps
•Responsible for the disassembly and assembly of unit equipment.
•Not only works well as part of a team, but promotes team values for others.
•Maintains a clean and orderly work environment and maintains housekeeping of job site.
•Returns all tools and materials used by the crew to the proper place at the end of shift.
•Must be willing to contribute to the development of other team members, including on the job training for A-Mechanic Apprentices, B-Mechanics, B- Mechanic Apprentices and Laborers.
•Must fully participate in the safety assessment of the job and completion of JSA’s.
•Fully participate in health, safety, quality and environmental processes.
•Is an ambassador for STARCON to the client, other contractors and the public.
oMinimum of 2 years of Experience in the Petrochemical Industry or related field, and has completed the training or job experience required for an A-Mechanic Apprentice.
oAll of the lower class skill sets from Laborer to A-Mechanic Apprentice
oWorking knowledge of an Extractor
oAbility to Draw Isometric drawings from plan drawings
oKnowledge of pipefitting take-offs and verify field pipe dimensions
oStrong knowledge of pipefitting math
oAbility to plan work activities ahead of work pace
oAbility to operate Man-lifts, Skid Steer Loaders, etc.
oAdvanced knowledge of rigging techniques
oAble to perform hot taps
oAbility to effectively use a Transit Level
oD.O.T. qualified, if required
oSound knowledge of rigging skills.
oComplete appropriate STARCON skills assessment test(s).
oMust be willing to attend continued training applicable to job as deemed necessary by STARCON.
oMust pass a craft-specific test (either written, performance or both, if required).
oMust have valid driver’s license.
oMay require TWIC card.
oMust comply with STARCON’s drug and alcohol policy.
oMay be required to pass physical examination, pre-employment if necessary, and as required by STARCON.
oMust be able to climb ladders and stairways.
oMust be able to carry 50 lbs. of tools and/or materials.
oMust be able to work at elevated heights as well as in confined spaces. (towers, vessels, excavations, etc.)
oMust be able to work extended hour on your feet on uneven surfaces. (dirt, concrete, asphalt, mud, gravel, etc.)
oMust be clean shaven and able to work while wearing a respirator and other personal protective equipment, when required.
oMust be able to pass applicable site-specific training.
oKnowledge of refinery and Chemical plant hazards which may require special precautions and PPE, such as Sulfuric, H2S and HF.
oMust undertake the appropriate safety/environmental training commensurate with the position and location.
oCPR and 1st Aid Trained, when required.
oMust be able to read and understand safety instructions, signs, labels and permits in English.
